Character Name: Shinji Matou
Canon: Fate/Stay Night
AU/OC/Previous Game: AU
Age: 16
Appearance: Shinji stands at 5 feet 6 inches with grey eyes and dark blue, wavy hair. His build is really nothing special: on the thin side of lean with a somewhat anemic pallor to his complexion. He typically wears his school uniform out of convenience, but can also be seen wearing flashy (see: tacky) "high end" clothing and strutting about shamelessly.
Cause of Death: Shinji is murdered during the Fifth Grail War by Illyasviel Von Einzbern.
Impact of Death: Intense self-pity with anger-driven outbursts. Shinji died with a big mess of unresolved issues, leaving him to be confronted by his failures and inadequacies. The effects of his upbringing combined with the frantic atmosphere of the Holy Grail War have left him shaken and highly unstable, so it will be a good amount of time before he comes to terms with all that has happened, and even longer before he admits it outright.

Character Info:
Shinji Matou is a product of the Matou family, which was once well-known for their talents in magecraft. Over time, however, the Matou blood had thinned until no heir could be born with magic circuits. Both Shinji and his father, Byakuya were born incapable of sorcery, making them veritable "black sheep" of the family. They are shunned by Zouken, the family head and Shinji's mother (also Byakuya's wife) was executed for failing to produce an heir fit for magecraft, as she had been known to possess an "inheritor trait". Shinji does not remember her and only knows of her being described as "A useless woman" by Zouken. Byakuya took to relieving his stress with alcohol consumption, which left Shinji for most of his younger years to roam around the unfriendly Matou compound alone. This neglect during his vital formative years has done irreparable damage to him on a developmental level.
Byakuya's brother, Kariya, also resided within the Matou home as the last known family member with a talent for magecraft. Though at first Shinji looks up to him, when he is old enough to understand that his father despises Kariya he follows suit and they too become estranged. While Shinji is still quite young, Zouken adopts Sakura Tohsaka as a new heir in his effort to continue the Matou bloodline. She is the first person Shinji meets who is similar in age and also is his first female encounter. Only knowing of what Zouken had said about his mother being "a useless woman", Shinji assumes that Sakura is not only a lesser being, but here solely for his entertainment. At first it starts with him ordering her around, but eventually leads to verbal abuse and hair pulling in an effort to draw a reaction out of her. Ultimately, Shinji begins experimenting with hitting Sakura when Kariya and Zouken aren't around, as he finds himself intensely jealous when she spends time with them. When she is given back to the Tohsaka family after one year, Shinji begins to act out in a destructive manner, missing Sakura because she was the only one who paid attention to him. He began to break things around the house, which prompted Byakuya to take more notice in him. It didn't matter to Shinji that the attention was negative; any form of acknowledgement was registered as positive. Getting noticed by being aggressive only inspired him to act more aggressive.
Eventually Shinji discovers the worm storage within the Matou compound, learning one of the darker secrets involving their magecraft. Horrified, Shinji becomes withdrawn and doesn't speak for three weeks. He spends this time going through his memories in search of clues regarding any other vital information regarding his family that he had not been privy to. Shinji becomes increasingly cold and bitter toward his father for hiding things from him, feeling out of place and unwelcome in the only home he knows. This stagnant period of tension is soon shaken, however, with the introduction of Kirei and Shirou Kotomine to the Matou household. They are two highly imposing personalities that shift the dynamic between Shinji and Byakuya to that of mutual understanding.
In a word, the Kotomines are bullies.
Shinji Matou is nothing if a crybaby and a coward. While he is boisterous in attitude and generous with his words, actual conflict is a definite threat. At first he attempted to reign in Shirou Kotomine much like he had with Sakura. Quickly, he learned that Shirou was not only going to turn the tables on him, but he was going to intensify it three fold. While Shinji inevitably bent to the whims of his new playmate, Byakuya was having trouble of his own with the older Kotomine. This intrusion of the Kotomines brought new arguments and fights into the Matou compound and tucked away the old ones as active volcanoes of resentment. There was absolutely no shortage of entertainment now. Shinji attempts to distract himself from the ruckus by putting more effort into his studies and discovers that he actually has a talent for academics. Reveling in the feeling of being good at something, he becomes very competitive about his studies.
Shinji's relationship with Shirou mutates into a macabre companionship, with his equally terrifying and enthusiastic advances frightening Shinji into submission. Though intelligent, Shinji is emotional and weak minded, bending backwards for praise from Shirou, which he is all too happy to give. For the sake of positive attention, Shinji is easily manipulated by Shirou into an unsettling state of dependency and while he often outwardly appears to be irritated by his presence, Shinji is all too quick to fervidly defend him. His ego carefully being built up and up, Shinji rekindles his resentment for Byakuya. Not about to let Kirei Kotomine be the only one to push his father around, Shinji begins acting out, eventually engaging in physical violence against him. It's a form of catharsis, considering that Shinji thinks there's nothing he can do to keep Byakuya from hating him. Addicted to the adrenaline rush it causes, the violence grows more frequent and intense until Byakuya hits a breaking point, subsequently commiting suicide. Upon finding his father's lifeless body, Shinji has a mental breakdown and repeatedly kicks his corpse, calling him a coward. The fact that Byakuya died without acknowledging Shinji properly leaves him too shaken to completely recover.
Shinji is all too eager to join the Fifth Holy Grail War, with the intention to use his future victory (in joint with Shirou Kotomine) to prove his worth to everyone. Outwardly it causes a surge of false-confidence, as he believes that they will undoubtedly win. With the assistance of Kirei Kotomine he is given command seals and summons Rider. Having a woman as a servant while on a serious power trip is unfortunate, as his ill-treatment of her sinks him to an all-time low. He abuses Rider as a distraction and as a means to impress Shirou. Due to Shinji's growing paranoia surrounding the significance of his participation in the Holy Grail War, he frequents between delusions of grandeur and severe panic attacks. When Rider is defeated by Archer, Shinji is both humiliated by losing to Rin Tohsaka and devastated at losing his chance to prove himself. Using his alliance as a platform to bounce back, Shinji commits the rest of his energy to assisting Shirou. The hope that they could still obtain the grail together is what strings him along, but the paranoia of others looking down on him due to the loss of his servant keeps him highly unstable.
Just as Shirou is killed by Rin Tohsaka and Archer, Shinji comes across Illyasviel Von Einzbern in front of the church. With his over-inflated confidence to aid him, he brushes her off as no one of important. That is, until she begins to insult him, baiting him. Shinji easily snaps at the first sign of disrespect and strikes her, while Illyasviel responds by using her mystic eyes to bind him. After teasing Shinji for underestimating her, she summons Berserker, revealing her presence as a master. Shinji is promptly killed, as he has no servant and is no longer a necessary part of the Grail War.
